Located at 606 Douglas Street in the heart of Victoria, The Glenshiel is a not-for-profit housing society dedicated to providing low- to middle-income seniors with a safe, affordable and independent place to call home. The building has been part of Victoria's history for more than a century, and The Glenshiel Housing Society has operated the residence since 1997. Today, it remains home to seniors who might otherwise have very few affordable options available to them.

But The Glenshiel is in dire need of help.

We currently provide a home to 64 seniors, many of whom are living on limited incomes and depend upon the affordability and stability The Glenshiel provides. Our residents receive much more than a room. Their housing includes three meals each day, housekeeping, utilities, laundry facilities, basic telephone and Wi-Fi, activities and the security of a staffed front desk 24 hours a day.

It is a very unique model: independent seniors are able to remain independent while living in a safe, supportive community where meals are prepared, someone is present around the clock, and isolation is reduced.

Yet the financial reality of maintaining that model has become increasingly difficult, and very nearly impossible. 

The cost of food has risen dramatically. Staffing costs continue to increase. Utilities, insurance, maintenance, supplies and virtually every service required to operate a residential building have become more expensive. At the same time, we are committed to keeping rents affordable for the seniors who call The Glenshiel home.
